Measures to support accessibility
We ensure the accessibility of our website by:
- including accessibility as part of our mission statement
- providing accessibility training for our staff
- assigning clear accessibility goals and responsibilities
- employing accessibility quality assurance methods
Conformance status
The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) define requirements for designers and developers to improve accessibility for people with disabilities. The KidsHealth website currently partially conforms with WCAG 2.1 level AA. Some of our own content, or content shared from external sources, doesn't fully conform to the AA accessibility standards.
Additional accessibility considerations
Our goal is to conform with both WCAG 2.1 Level AA guidelines and the current NZ Government Web Standards.
To achieve this goal we will:
- Improve alt texts and video transcripts, as well as provide text alternatives for illustrations.
- React to feedback from the disability and accessibility communities in a timely manner.
- Run further tests and improve our compliance on an ongoing basis.
- Improve technology if updates are available.

Limitations and alternatives
Despite our best efforts to ensure the accessibility of our website, there may be some limitations. Below is a description of known limitations, and potential solutions.
Known limitations and potential solutions:
- Older browsers on older computers or handheld devices might be limited in functionality. We recommend keeping your Operating Systems and browsers up-to-date to ensure the security of your devices.
- Not all labels and descriptions on illustrations and images have alternative text versions, but in most cases text on images is repeating the text content on the page. The new website allows us to provide alternative text versions for images as well as videos, and we are working through our media to provide text alternatives in 2025.
- Not all videos sourced from other sites provide transcripts. We are working with our partners to improve text alternatives for videos.
Assessment approach
We assessed the accessibility of this website by the following approaches:
- Our new site has been evaluated using WAVE Web Accessibility Evaluation Tools.
